Elyssa Schulist's review of Geotab

Engine-diagnostics alerts are useless - they kept spitting out the same vague fault code (P0420) and had me pulling a truck off the road twice this month. I run two trucks and have hauled in the Midwest for 15 years; every false alarm cost me a day in the shop, a missed load and roughly $350 in direct losses because the logs give no clear context to decide whether to keep rolling.

After twenty years managing a 40-truck Midwest fleet, I jumped onto Geotab to get a handle on our maintenance chaos. The engine diagnostics - especially the real-time DTC alerts that translate codes into plain English with suggested actions - is what sold me. Last winter it flagged a coolant-temp sensor fault two days before a long haul that would have left us stranded; scheduling the fix ahead of time saved a night and a towing bill. Setting custom thresholds for alerts was a bit fiddly and the mobile app buries some options, so there’s a learning curve. Still, the diagnostic alerts cut our unexpected engine downtime noticeably and paid for the subscription within months.

I've used Geotab for about five years. One winter on I-80 with a loaded trailer it pinged me about a coolant-temp spike and a P0480 fan fault before the cab gauge even warmed up - pulled off at the next exit, swapped trucks, and what could've been a blown head and a week out of service turned into a quick shop visit the next morning. I'm an owner-operator with two trucks in the Midwest and that early alert saved me big, though the web dashboard can be a little clunky at times.

Three years on the West Coast running a small three-truck outfit made me brace for a long rollout and a weekend of paperwork, and the admin settings did take a bit of poking to sort. The surprise was the GO unit - plugged into the OBD in ten minutes and I was watching live locations and engine codes on the map, which was the quick win I needed.
